Spain is divided into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities (Ceuta and Melilla). These regions have certain legislative, executive and administrative powers, which in many ways makes them similar to federal entities. In turn, these autonomous communities can be divided into provinces, which are smaller administrative units. There are 50 provinces throughout Spain.
